On our last day in Italy we stayed in Rome to visit a few more iconic sites. Given the sequence of events in our schedule, Colin and Heather haven’t had much time to explore Rome so in the morning they visited the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Borghese Park. Afterwards, we all went to lunch and had the best pizza of our trip at La Montecarlo. I feel in love with artichoke on this trip so my pizza had artichoke. Others got an anchovy pizza, meat lovers, and cheese pizza.

After some good eats, we went off for some site seeing. The first stop was the coliseum and it didn’t disappoint. It was yet another incredible structure with so much rich history. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come as a civilization, but an even bigger reminder that we have a long ways to go and structural societal changes can take time. The coliseum looked like it could hold 20 – 30K people, which is as large as some arenas can hold today. Probably the most interesting fact I learned was that early on, the Romans used to have boat fights here. The arena was filled with water and boats would have epic battles in front of the large crowd. This seems like an incredible feat at the time.

After some site seeing, we went for happy hour to enjoy our first aperol spritz, a refreshing summertime drink with aperol, prosecco, and soda water. For dinner, we went to Bar del fico for traditional roman cuisine. I couldn’t leave without indulging in yet another dish of amatriciana.

We capped off the evening with another round of gelato and a McDonald’s run for Ryan so he could try the unique items in Italy.

Until next time…
